The Butterfly Expansion: Volumetric lightness and family scale in Windsor Terrace.
Balancing the preservation of historic Windsor Terrace charm with the needs of a growing family, this renovation transforms a modest two-bedroom footprint into a spacious four-bedroom, two-bathroom residence. The primary objective was to expand the envelope for entertaining without losing the home's original soul.
The defining architectural intervention is a rear extension capped by a distinctive butterfly roof. This structural form acts as a light scoop, allowing the ceiling heights to soar as the room reaches toward the rear yard, rejecting the compression often felt in standard townhouse additions. This new volume houses a generous kitchen and dining area that opens through massive double sliding doors onto a new steel deck, effectively doubling the entertaining space.
Inside, the design bridges the gap between sophisticated and family-friendly. The material palette features a playful yet refined mix of warm natural tones and custom-mixed blue tiles in the children's baths. To support modern family life, we integrated expansive custom storage and a dedicated work-from-home area, detailed with millwork profiles that make it feel like part of the home’s original fabric rather than a utilitarian afterthought.
