Structural Clarity: Dissolving walls to invite the Hastings landscape inward.

Commissioned by a Creative Director, this renovation in Hastings-on-Hudson began with a modest brief—a bathroom update—but evolved into a comprehensive reimagining of the home's public spaces. The driving concept was to dissolve interior boundaries and saturate the home in the earthy, natural palette that defines the surrounding river town landscape.

The architectural centerpiece of the project was the removal of a central load-bearing wall to unify the kitchen and dining areas. This was a complex logistical feat, requiring the precise threading of massive structural steel members through the existing residential frame. The result is a light-filled volume that maximizes and encourages flow.

Inside, the material selections ground the space in warmth. The entryway features tactile, earthy tiles from Zia Tile, transitioning into original flooring that was salvaged, reused, and expertly feathered with new timber to create a continuous surface. The expanded kitchen features a backsplash with handmade tile from Zia Tile, custom millwork by Gotham Cabinetry, anchored by a new built-in library wall in the dining zone. Perhaps the most charming intervention is the transformation of a dark, underutilized closet nook, which we restructured and pierced with light to create an intimate, sun-drenched breakfast corner.
